The PO boxes are housed on the basement floor of the post office building. Eusebio makes sure to go when Julia is at work, but even so, he takes precautions: he disguises himself with a fake beard and dark glasses, he wears old clothes and alters his gait, dragging his feet behind him, hunching over. He circles the block twice before entering, pausing at the corners to check if he is being followed. Then, at the door to the building, he examines the cars parked in the street, one by one, to see if he can spot anyone inside watching him. He is convinced that Marcia will succumb to the temptation to come here in search of Segismundo and then follow him home. He does not want to risk running into her or being caught in the act.

Having made sure that no one is watching him, he enters the building and descends the steps to the basement. Three women are waiting in line for their packages or certified letters to be handed over. One of them turns around to look at him when he enters. Eusebio takes out the key to the deposit box from inside one of his jacket pockets. He does not keep it on his key ring, in case Julia spots it; he hides it among his clothes or between the pages of a book. When he opens his box, he feels nothing. The first few times, he was breathless with excitement at the thought of finding a letter from Marcia, something that would at long last put an end to all mysteries, but he has for some time now been resigned to his fate. The metal box is empty. Without losing heart, Eusebio locks the box again and slips the key into his pocket. He puts on his sunglasses and adjusts his beard, which has slipped down over his lips. He emerges onto the street again, and after scanning his surroundings to make sure the coast is clear, he beats a retreat.
